How to heal from loss?

5 Steps that can help you keep living

What is loss?

Every person experiences it in their own way. As for me, I faced loss after I lost my father to cancer. After months of fighting the disease, he passed away, leaving me devastated. Even though I knew that grieving was a normal process, I had a hard time carrying all that pain in my heart. It was a long path to healing, including group therapy.

Here, I will share the key things that I learned there that helped me on my way to healing. You might find some of them helpful and some not. Please remember – we all experience loss in a different way and heal from it. What you need to do is take your time and try to make it one day at a time.

As for me, it took me around one year to be able to experience joy in life, and another several years to come to the stage of acceptance and letting go.

So, here are the things I realized when I was healing from my loss:

1. Be patient and don’t push yourself

Healing from loss is a journey that no one can truly prepare for. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, a job, a relationship, or even a dream, the pain can be overwhelming and all-consuming. It's important to remember that healing from loss is a complex process that takes time and patience.

2. Let go of your pain doesn’t mean to diminish your loss

One of the key points to keep in mind is that reaching the stage of acceptance does not mean forgetting about your pain or the person or thing you lost. It means learning to honor the memory of what was lost while still living your life. It's about finding a way to carry that loss with you, allowing it to shape you without defining you.

3. It might be ‘good’ and ‘bad’ days on the way to healing

The healing process is not linear, and it's normal to experience ups and downs along the way. There will be moments of darkness where the pain feels unbearable, but it's important to remember that you are human, and it's okay to give yourself space to feel those emotions. It's okay to grieve and to feel the weight of your loss.

4. You are not alone

One way to find relief and support during the healing process is by talking to others who have experienced similar losses. Support groups provide a safe space to share your feelings and experiences and to connect with others who understand what you're going through. One conversation about your challenges on the path to healing might become a pillar of your emotional health. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and support you, and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

5. Practice self-care on the day you feel down

It's important to take care of yourself during this time. Make sure to prioritize self-care, whether that means getting enough rest, eating well, exercising, or engaging in activities that bring you a sense of calm.

Healing from loss is a process that takes time, but it is possible to find peace and move forward with your life. Remember to be patient with yourself, to honor your feelings, and to seek support when you need it. You are not alone in your journey, and there is hope for healing and growth on the other side of loss.

Sincerely yours,
